This final commentary is a fairly dismal one, though. I really enjoyed the Maquis episodes because they so directly challenged the Federation paradise on a philosophical level. An event unrelated to them, Dukat’s signing of the treaty with the Dominion, ended their cause. The Maquis, for all their righteousness, are but a clanging symbol in the galaxy. In fact, for the same reason, the whole premise of the episode, Sisko trying to fend off a war instigated by the Maquis, is utterly pointless. The station is the first target of the Dominion and a lot of folks die in that assault. Quark’s entire exchange with Morn will absolutely come to pass in just a couple episodes. There is a lot of interesting foreshadowing here. The final two seasons obviously go in a very different direction from the notion of a frontier station with rebelling colonies. This was good closure to an excellent story arc, and I’m glad they gave the Maquis such firm closure.
This episode is the death of Eddington and the final commentary DS9 has for the Maquis storyline.
